    Authored by Leslie Hart

French Horn: Basics 1 is designed to introduce beginner students to the horn in an efficient, gradual, and fun way that will lay a solid foundation for growth on the instrument. This course is designed for students to play the horn properly, but also to have fun! By taking these Basics-level courses, students are preparing themselves for a lifetime of making music and learning the language of music. Technique is present in every lesson in Basics 1. Lessons also cover ear training, music reading skills, and developing critical listening skills. Students will observe professional footage through recordings and video, giving them the inspiration to dig into the exercises designed to improve comprehension and musicianship. This course also looks at the history of the French horn’s development, giving students insight into how this instrument functions and why they’re learning to play with good technique. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester! • French Horn: Basics 2

    Authored by Leslie Hart

French Horn: Basics 2 builds upon skills and technique developed in Basics 1. Basics 2 looks at repertoire specific to horn that students will need to know to further their playing careers. Students will learn horn parts from symphonies and operas while also exploring the composers and time periods to provide a complete picture of why each work is significant. Playing excerpts will become more challenging as the course continues, and near the end of the course students will perform a standard solo that is commonly asked for in high school auditions. Students will improve their composition techniques (transposition and transcription) as well as improvisation, giving them the skills they need to begin creating music that suits their interests and abilities. By the end of the semester, students will have the necessary musical skills and playing technique to be able to perform more advanced pieces, as well as the comprehension to understand the musical function and importance of each work. Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams.  By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester!
