  • Drums: Basics 2

    Authored by John Riley

Welcome to Drums: Basics 2! In this second course of lessons for drum set, the focus is on groove drumming. Students will explore adding more texture and substance to grooves by using open/close hihat techniques (hihat “barking”), and incorporating the bell of the ride for accented patterns that will take their grooves to the next level. Students will also dedicate lessons to sixteenth-note based grooves, focusing on new and exciting sixteenth note bass drum patterns, as well as technique for playing up-tempo sixteenth-note grooves using alternating hand patterns. In addition to the straight ahead sixteenth-note grooves students will learn a few of the tried and true syncopated ride and hihat patterns that will transform the sound and feel of their grooves and provide some great new options for them to explore. This course also begins looking to move away from the backbeat by exploring different snare drum ideas and rhythms within these grooves. Lastly, there’s an added lesson focusing on a groove concept created by the legend himself, Steve Gadd, which will be sure to challenge students, and allow them to sound like a true pro! Students can expect to encounter a variety of listening and playing assignments, as well as lesson quizzes and exams. By the end of the course, students will have a portfolio of recordings that reflect the progress they made and will be ready for the next semester! Drums: Basics 2 is loaded with more of the basic drumming techniques that every drummer needs to know, so buckle up and dig in!
